Safe Harbor® Certification

Compliance assures the uninterrupted passage of data between the US and EU countries.

The European Commission's Directive on Data Protection prohibits the transfer of personal data to non-European Union nations that do not meet the European ‘adequacy’ standard for privacy protection. The US and Europe adopt different approaches to this critical issue–and so they agreed on the ‘Safe Harbor’ framework to allow US operators to transfer data without facing prosecution by European authorities under European privacy laws.

As a holder of Safe Harbor certification, PEER 1 Hosting is deemed to provide ‘adequate’ privacy protection. As such, all of our customer data is pre-certified to move freely in and out of European Union countries, making the connection with these countries more timely and cost-effective.

The benefits are significant:

  • All 27 Member States of the European Union are bound by the European Commission's finding of adequacy
  • Companies participating in the Safe Harbor are deemed ‘adequate’ and data flows to those companies continue uninterrupted
  • Member State requirements for prior approval of data transfers are either waived or approval automatically granted
