What is Colocation Hosting?
Colocation hosting is a service offered by a small number of Internet Service Providers (ISPs), with specially equipped datacenters. The ISP leases datacenter space to clients, for placing their privately owned servers at the datacenter. The server hardware is connected to the datacenter's network and physical infrastructure, but is operated by the client and does not receive any system administration from the ISP. Each client is given a cabinet or a cage, which is securely locked and inaccessible to other colocation clients.
Colocation hosting lets clients take advantage of superior datacenter infrastructure while maintaining control of their servers. Datacenter amenities include physical security (card entry, video monitoring of the facilities), environmental control (constant temperature and humidity maintenance, particulates filtration), fire suppression systems, redundant power sources and UPS backup, large capacity of multi-homed quality bandwidth, and available server monitoring and technical services.
Colocation hosting is an effective way to achieve business continuity, scalability, and minimal network latency, at a fraction of the cost it takes to accomplish the same in a private datacenter, while maintaining total control over the physical server, the operating system and the applications.
PEER 1 offers colocation services at state-of-the-art facilities in eight major city centers across the US and Canada, including Vancouver, Toronto, San Jose, Los Angeles, New York, and Miami.
