Dedicated Server Colocation

Dedicated server colocation is the fundamental dilemma of web hosting. A dedicated server is leased from an Internet Service Provider (ISP), and administered by the leasing client. Colocation, in contrast, is the act of deploying one or more private servers in a datacenter space leased from an ISP. A collocated server is used by only one client, and is, therefore, a dedicated server by definition. Thus, dedicated server colocation can be viewed as the choice between buying a server and hosting it at a datacenter, and leasing a server hosted at an ISP's datacenter.

In both cases, either a dedicated server or colocation scenario, hardware is connected to the datacenter's network and physical infrastructure, and enjoys the superior datacenter physical security, environmental control, fire suppression, redundant power, plentiful quality bandwidth, as well as services such as server and port monitoring, reboots, central storage, backups, firewall and more. The dilemma comes down to the implications of physical access. Colocation clients maintain physical control over servers, and can use hardware and software that are neither provided nor supported by the ISP. Dedicated server users outsource server and operating system maintenance and administration to the ISP, and must choose from platforms supported by the ISP.
