PEER 1 Hosting Sponsors Spinal Tap Charity Curling Bonspiel

Wednesday, January 26th, 2011  |  by Rajan Sodhi  |   No Comments

Besides hockey, curling took center stage at the 2010 Winter Olympics. And why not? Ice. Rocks. Brooms. It’s like chess on ice, with a little Candiana thrown in.

PEER 1 Hosting is pleased to be sponsoring the 20th Annual Spinal Tap Charity Bonspiel being held on Saturday, February 26th in Thornhill, Ontario. The annual event benefits the Canadian Spinal Research Organization (CSRO), and brings together curling greats and companies for a great cause. This year, we are sponsoring the charity dinner and taking to the ice to sweep right along with celebrity curlers such as two-time World Champions Glenn Howard, Richard Hart and Randy Ferbey.

We’ll be entering two teams, one lead by our very own Jay Newman – a curling Texan, this must be a first. We’ll also be donating $100 from every hosting sale into our new flagship Toronto datacenter to CSRO throughout the months of January and February 2011. Come out and cheer us on!

Details

  • Venue: Thornhill Golf & Country Club (Thornhill, ON)
  • Date: Saturday, February 26, 2011
  • Time: Kicks off at 8:30AM

Today, we announced we’re breaking ground on a new 50,000 square foot datacenter in Portsmouth, United Kingdom. Following the POD method we used to build out our latest Toronto datacenter – allows us to build out in phases efficiently based on demand – the first POD is scheduled for completion for Fall 2011.

As with the Toronto datacenter, we will be offering all of three major lines of hosting – Managed Hosting, Colocation, and Dedicated Servers (under the ServerBeach brand). The new facility will have capacity for approximately 20,000 servers. This is a significant investment by the company, and a testament to our belief in the UK market as well as our desire to further strengthen our global presence. Demand for European datacenter space alone is expected to double by 2015.

datacenter portsmouth uk mapWe will continue to further our green practices introduced with the Toronto datacenter build-out. The new UK datacenter will adopt some the latest best practices and technologies to reduce its overall carbon footprint and energy consumption. These include the use of redundant high efficiency VFD centrifugal chillers and heat exchangers to take advantage of “free cooling” year long. Based on the location of Portsmouth, the UK datacenter will generate 85% free air cooling from its natural environment. This enables us to use more environmentally friendly refrigerants not commonly found in current air-cooled systems.
