BarCamp Vancouver, Pretty in Pink

Barcamp 2007 Vancouver

PEER 1 sponsored BarCamp Vancouver 2007 on Saturday which was held at a cool venue called Workspace in Gastown. What a truly great event! The first one I’ve attended (I did go to Northern Voice earlier in the year which is a much bigger, annual version). This un-conference had such a great vibe to it, unlike any other conference I’ve been too… any I’ve been to many. The agenda for the day came together in a 10-minute, slightly chaotic preamble where people who had a topic to discuss, posted it up on a giant timetable sheet pasted up on a wall. Rooms and times were allocated and then the sessions began. Two topics that stood out for me were “Hacking the iPhone in Canada” and “Fighting Complexity with Video”, which was conducted by Lee LeFever of Common Craft. He and his wife have developed a series of short videos that take topics such as social bookmarking and simplify it for the mass consumption. There approach is quick and witty with a purposeful home-made feel. They’ve launched there videos on Blip.tv and YouTube and are getting a ton of traffic, and are now producing similar videos for clients. He also mentioned a site called DotSub.com that’s currently in beta. The site allows you to upload your videos and add subtitles to it that are translated in many languages. Now your videos can reach a much broader audience that includes non-english speaking and the hearing-impaired.

Lots of great knowledge at BarCamp to consume. I highly recommend you coming out for the next one in Vancouver or one in your area (for a listing of BarCamps around the world, click here). And don’t worry, not every BarCamp will have you wearing fuscia-coloured shirts.

John Chow with Latency Kills Shirt

Big money blogger John Chow, owner of TheTechZone.com was spotted eating a bowl of pork chop with macaroni at Kam Do in our “Latency Kills” shirt. John’s blog receives 300k to 400k pages views per month, and provides fantastically useful information in converting your traffic into currency. Some great investment and income tax savings tips too. Thanks Ed. Some swag coming your way.

It Pays to Be a Penguin

Club Penguin

Lane Merrifield, Dave Krysko and Lance Priebe are going to Disneyland! The founders of popular kids site Club Penguin just got acquired by Disney as announced today. Check out Disney’s home page to find out happy the Magic Kingdom is about the deal. The site will now be called ‘Disney’s Club Penguin’, but will continue to operate out of Kelowna, BC, Canada. Way to go boys! Club Penguin hosts with us at PEER 1 and it’s amazing and incredibly satisfying to see another one of our clients hit the big money. Back in October 2006, startup client YouTube was acquired by Google in a billion dollar blockbuster deal.

The Club Penguin founders will receive $350 million, with an additional $350 million available to them based on the performance of the site. Lane will also become the executive vice president of The Walt Disney Internet Group (WDIG), reporting to WDIG President Steve Wadsworth. Disney plans no immediate changes to the operation or business model of Club Penguin.

The site generates revenue through subscribers and online merchandise sales, rather than the popular advertising revenue model adopted by most of today’s sites.
